Madeleine Force was born on October 6, 1893, in New York City. She was the only child of Armenian immigrants who had fled their homeland during the Armenian Genocide. Her father worked as a janitor and her mother as a maid. When Madeleine was five years old, her father died, leaving her mother to support the family on her own. Madeleine’s early childhood was spent in poverty.
Despite her humble beginnings, Madeleine was an intelligent and ambitious young woman. She excelled in school and won a scholarship to attend Vassar College. At Vassar, she met Jhon Jacob Astor IV, the heir to one of America’s wealthiest families. The two began dating and, after graduation, they married on September 9, 1916. Madeleine was 22 years old at the time of her marriage; Jhon was 25.

However, their marriage was not to last. In April 1912, John Jacob Astor IV boarded the Titanic for its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1909, at the age of sixteen, she married James Robert deWolfe, a Bostonian financier whom she had met two years earlier. The couple had one child together, a son named James Bertram; however, they divorced in 1915.
In 1916,Madeleine Astor married William Vincent Astor, the great-grandson of John Jacob Astor II. The following year she gave birth to her only daughter with William Astor, actress Frances Aileen “Babe” Cushing Paley. The marriage lasted until 1925 when the couple divorced; however, they remained on good terms and continued to socialize together.

In 1916, Madeline met John Jacob Astor at a party in Newport, Rhode Island. Astor was one of the richest men in America and Madeline’s family was eager for her to marry him. The two wed on September 9, 1916, just three months after they met. Madeline was 23 years old and John Jacob Astor was 47.
The couple had four children: William Vincent (born 1917), Aileen force (born 1918), John Jacob IV (born 1920), and Madeleine Astor (born 1922).
The family lived a life of luxury until the early hours of April 15th 1912, when the Titanic hit an iceberg and began to sink. John Jacob Astor helped his pregnant wife into a lifeboat and then went back onto the Titanic to look for his son Vincent. Neither Astor nor Vincent survived the sinking.
Madeline Astor was just 29 years old when she became a widow with two young children. She later remarried stockbroker Andrew Underwood in 1926 but they divorced in 1932. In later years, she married Prince Alexander Ivanovich Obolensky but they too divorced after a few years.
Madeleine Astor died on March 3rd 1940 at the age of 46 from complications related to ulcers.
